LOS ANGELES -- A Southern California immigrant rights group has asked Target stores to stop selling an "illegal alien" Halloween costume it says is offensive to immigrants.

The costume, posted on Target's web site, features the mask of an alien with a green card and an orange jumpsuit with "illegal alien" written across the front.

Target spokesman Joshua Thomas says the company is removing the costume from the site after receiving several complaints.

He says the store never intended to sell the outfit but included it in its online offerings by mistake.

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, says she wrote an e-mail to the Minneapolis-based retailer Friday calling the costume "distasteful, mean-spirited, and ignorant of social stigmas and current debate on immigration reform."

well, I don't think the illegal immigration thing is offensive itself. It may be offensive to some "legal" mexicans who gets targeted and treated like illegals just because they are mexican.

It is offensive to them because they get treated like illegals even though they are not, so this costume is connected to them somehow.

That is about the most culturally insensitive thing I've read in a while.

I can't believe how some people feel about immigrants here. Sure they're here illegally, and that means that they shouldn't be here, but they're here for a reason (hint, if people didn't want to cheap out and pay illegal immigrants under the table, they wouldn't be coming here to work, we're attacking the effect rather than the cause), but that doesn't mean they gave up their dignity at the border.

These people are human beings and deserve the respect that is inherent in that. They can be fined, deported, etc., but they shouldn't lose basic human rights. Even George fucking W Bush said that, and I am not particularly fond of the man. You're wishing death on someone because they're impoverished and trying to support themselves? Go away and die somewhere, instead of trying to survive here? Wow, you're a warm-hearted man about town.

I love the idea that these 'illegal' immigrants are taking up all the jobs and how they're living off our system. There's more 'legal' Americans here slacking and living off the system than the illegal ones. These people of all races work damn hard to earn a living trying to live a dream in America. Wow...

When did we become so high and mighty that we forgot what it was like to be human and worse of all struggling to survive; it's not like most of us are even in a situation that we would consider ourselves to be middle class or even wealthy. Have we forgotten the American Dream? Or was that just for the people born here that may have forgotten where our original roots came from?

I'm not going to debate much on this topic. Just remember that when people are down and out, struggling just to eat or keep warm I would hope most will do the right thing and look at them with respect.

As for the costume I think it's a pretty witty outfit. Maybe a bit too touchy but witty nonetheless...
