Default Seller Backed Out of Car Deal

Just a little pissed off so just posting and wondering if any of you guys would feel the same way.

Was about to purchase from private owner.
    - I posted an ad. He contacted me. I replied and set up a meet.
    - 05 Legacy GT: 48K miles: Excellent Condition: $13,500 was asking price. KBB is $13,400. NADA is $14,650 Retail.
    - I went to look at it. Liked it. WE BOTH agreed to the $13,500 and shook on it and told him I'd be getting the money the following weekend. (Turns out we kind've knew the same people so I trusted him on the deal and therefore didn't worry bout putting down a deposit)
    - Next day we contact him to make arrangements to pick up the car. Now on the phone, he says he wants $14,000! "commanded" the wife.
    - I said fine, as long as I get the COBB CBE with the car too then I'm fine.
    - Response from seller: $14,000 w/out CBE.

Honestly, if in the beginning we had agreed and shook on $14K I would have purchased the vehicle anyways. $500 is not that big of a deal. Being a prick is.

I was frustrated, and it's the principal that matters so I told him forget it because I seriously felt that this was an A$$hole move.

So... Should I be mad? Or should I've just purchased the car anyways?

Edit: Lesson learned though. Always put a check deposit down w/ quick detail of agreement on memo line. I could have legally doubled my money back when some a$$hat pulls this kind of move.

I'd just say fuck him. Next thing you know, when you get there with the 14k, he's going to want 14.5, or 15. Thats how those people work.

The wife thing is bullshit, and just his excuse. Like you said, $500 isnt a big deal, and he's just trying to milk you for more money.

You definitely have reason to be angry. You had an agreement. If he was not planning to live up to that agreement he should not have agreed to it. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who do not understand that an agreement has conditions for BOTH parties. In his head it was probably an agreement for you to buy the car and nothing more. I learned the same lesson recently the hard way where a seller sold the car out from under me. The sad act is, until money has changed hands, people can screw with you all they want. An agreement should be enough, but for many people it means little to nothing.

*edit* Wow, I said agreement a lot.

Happened to me when I bought my first bike, it's a part of life. You have every right to be mad, but you have every right to walk away too (which you did).

    Sucks though.

I'd walk from that one. Who knows what kind of hidden problems you will have down the line with the car. If he's dishonest on the price, hes dishonest on how sound the car is. Walk away and dont look back.

btw, I got my lgt from the suby dealer in brooklyn park. Had the best car buying experience of my life there. I've bought new twice before, this is my 6th car and it was the best, sincerely i mean this.

My friend bought an '06 wrx limited from the dealership in Minnetonka. His tranny started slipping a couple days later and he said it was the worst buying experience he ever had. So avoid that place if you can.
I also looked at a few lgt's at the burnsville Subaru. That place was pretty udersireable for me. Lots of pressure and shadiness.

This happens a lot and the best way is to just walk away. At least you didn't make a deposit; I honestly think it's an awful idea for a deposit for private sales without any contract because you never know who might try to screw you over.

If he's willing to scam you by not agreeing to the stated price imagine what he might be hiding in the sale? You should have told his wife and himself to go choke on a dick.

$12,500? I'd go even lower and pretend that you're already going to buy another one in better condition and for less. If he agrees then tell him to meet at some appointed place and never show up. When he calls asking why you didn't show up tell him 'oh, I thought you knew I was fuckin' with you?'

I wouldn't buy it from him even if it was for less.

I'd just walk away. I wouldn't trust him after that, and I'm sure you will have plenty more chances to buy a similar car.

    This.

Call him back, tell him you found one for 12.5k with less miles, and your going to pick it up at the end of the week. some will drop their price, others will say buy that one.

also comment about he's whipped, wife has balls in a jar, etc... demean him for letting his wife make the decisions. it's fun, and the guy's already screwed you once.

If he wasnt willing to "lose" $500 on a $13,500 sale, then I say screw him. Very shady part deal on his part and obviously he doesnt really want or is to hard up to sell it.

I do that, instead of sayin that I was fuckin with him I'd tell him my (wife for you?) Girlfriends brothers cousin told me I couldn't go.

IMHO An agreement is an agreement. It should have been a done deal.

Should've, Could've, Would've... Lesson Learned. When I met up with him he seemed like a straight up guy but you can't trust everyone.

I've tried contacting that place several times but haven't received any hits back. I'll try calling him specifically.

Lulz... dude was like $14K for the car w/o CBE... it's your choice if you wanna buy it or not cause I don't really care if it sells or not... I was thinking "THEN DON'T FREAKIN CONTACT ME SAYING YOU WANT TO SELL BIATCH!"... but didn't say it. I'm usually not passive aggressive so I'm not sure I held back.

    My thoughts exactly.

Thanks everyone who responded. Everyone knows everyone somehow, so I'm sure I'm going to run into this guy again.

Hell yeah, he helped me out a TON even though I ended up picking up something private party. His knowledge base of Subarus is fuckin amazing. I've sent 5-6 people his way, and won't hesitate to send more.

Perfect, I completely agree. It was a dick move to begin with, so you might as well have some fun with it. Once/if he agrees to 12.5k, tell him you want to take it over and have a complete inspection done on it, because you just want to "make sure" that the car is alright.

Ha ha ha. She was more pissed off than I was. My thought on it was "If he's gonna be an A-hole, pu$$y like that then f-him." See was more the "I'm gonna find everyone he knows and tell everyone how much of a douche he is."
