Yes iam being cheap!!! I'm buying a motor for my brother and just want to know if its legit. I searched through google and found one site that does it for free but its for only canadian cars. Also found another site but its for colorado...not sure if it checks all states. https://www.colorado.gov/apps/dps/mvvs/public/entry.jsf Just checking to see if you guys/gals know of a free site out there.

I've done this. Get the sellers name, address, and car make and model. Call THEIR local police unit non-emergency line. You simply ask if vin#... has any flags on it or has been reported stolen. They should be able to tell you.

When I called they would not GIVE me any of the sellers info, they would only verify that the info I had was correct, so make sure you have plenty of information about the seller.

You can get a free VIN check from the National Insurance Crime Bureau. "NICB's VINCheck is a service provided to the public to assist in determining if a vehicle has been reported as stolen, but not recovered, or has been reported as a salvage vehicle by cooperating NICB members. To perform a search a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is required. A maximum of five VINCheck searches can be conducted within a 24 hour period."

Basically what it does is you enter the VIN and it will tell you if the VIN comes back stolen or has a salvage title. The difference from this and Carfax is you have to pay like $35 for Carfax and Carfax gives you a whole vehicle history report. NICB just lets you know if the car is stolen or salvage, which can be very useful when buying a car. Is Carfax better, sure it is, but NICB is free so beggars cant be choosers lol.

The NICB website and direct link to the VIN check is:

    https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_awareness/vincheck

    Hope that helps,

There is also salvage auctions webpage http://www.easyexport.us/?a_aid=49d60ae81f5dd that allows you to get the pictures for some salvage vehicles that are currently rebuilt. Just search by VIN. You may also watch live auctions there.
